What is acupuncture versus dry needling?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method of treatment which follows meridians and is designed to alter the flow of Qi (or energy in the body). Modern day dry needling techniques are based on evidence and research and aim to treat trigger points and specific injury locations to assist in regulation of inflammation, circulation and reducing localised trigger point pain for muscle relaxation.
How does acupuncture help assist in healing injury?
At AK Physiotherapy, acupuncture and/or dry needling is used to treat pain and reduce muscle tightness/spasm in acute and chronic pain or injury. We may also use this type of therapy to assist in the reduction of swelling post injury (surround the dragon), or to help assist in muscle recovery after an intense training session (or several). This type of treatment has also been shown to be quite effective for healing tendinitis and in reducing symptoms of headache. The effects of using this technique include:
- increased blood flow for healing
- increased inflammatory response for healing
- down regulation of nervous system to cause relaxation
- trigger point release and lengthening of muscle tissue
- pain relief due to blocking of pain fibres sending signals to the brain about pain
What areas can you treat with acupuncture/dry needling?
Any muscular areas including traps, lats, back muscles, glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves (and more). Can also be used to treat back pain/neck pain/headaches/sinus/tendinitis/chronic pain.
